The True Meaning of Honor Free Online Research Papers I’m not going to sit here and preach to you that I have met and interacted with every type of person, because I haven’t. And I can assure you that nobody else in this world has either. So how would a boy who grew up in the war torn streets of Afghanistan define honor compared to the daughter of a wealthy investment banker? The true meaning of honor has to mean something different to different people from cultures, cultures with different values, those with different character, and those who have had different life experiences. For example, not lying to a parent might not be as honorable as other things to someone who has experienced sacrificing something of value for the betterment of someone else. I can open up a dictionary and tell you that the definition of honor is â€Å"honesty, fairness, or integrity in ones beliefs and actions,† or maybe â€Å"A principled uprightness of character; personal integrity.† I can also tell you that the word has a Latin, Middle English, and Anglo-French origin and to pronounce it you have to be able to say on-er. But a bunch of words jumbled together by the folks at American Heritage can only give you the impression that you now possess the knowledge of what â€Å"honor† really means. But do you? I don’t. Truthfully, I have no idea what those American Heritage literary geniuses are trying to tell me. However, I can certainly tell you my opinion. I believe honor is being you, in the sense of being individual, independent, and thinking for yourself while doing what you believe is right. Today, everyone is being brainwashed to do what society wants them to do and have the same opinion about everything. Yes, that Northface jacket, those gazillion Polos, and having the best truck in town might get you respect, but how much of an individual are you? How much of this â€Å"honor† would it take for you to drive something more fuel efficient? Or to wear something outside of the boundaries of the standard classic fit Polo? I ask myself this as well because I am also guilty of following some trends. So how much individuality do I have? Am I honorable? To take individuality to a further extent, how much honor does one have to have to risk sacrificing his or her life to help someone else need, especially if no one else around does? In the epic poem Beowulf, Wiglaf, a soldier of the king Beowulf, has enough individuality to decide that he alone will assist his loyal king instead of fleeing like the rest of the warriors. Honor of this magnitude is hard to rival. Since honor to different people can mean things completely different, it’s almost impossible to come up with a solid definition of what it actually is. To some people being a brave soldier and dying for the country you love is honorable. For others, it might be being a Peace Corps volunteer in a poor African country. While both of these instances that are considered honorable might be a little different, I think it all goes back to being an individual and doing what you think is right. Those volunteers don’t go to Africa just for an experience. They go to help a world in need. Those soldiers aren’t out there dying for any reason, they are ensuring America stays free. So in the end, to you, me, or even the girl next door, what is considered honorable might seem to be completely different, but it still shares the same basic idea. To be honorable is to be that person who goes against society, leads not follows by being an individual, or even helps a king slay a fire breathing dragon. And while even in Pagan times honor was present, throughout that tiny bit of time that has elapsed till now, the same basic idea still exists. Case Study Stress Related Essay Michael is to 52-year-old male who was referred to me for memory problems. Michael stated that his wife has complained that he has become very forgetful lately. Michael also stated that he feels anxious due to the fact that his wife has threatened divorce, because he works too much and the thought that he may lose his job. He also explained that at times it’s very difficult for him to pay attention in class. He stated that his mind wonders allowing him to remember only main concepts and not the details of material. When an individual is experiencing problems which cause extreme stress and anxiety that Michael is experiencing it can cause memory loss and what psychologist calls â€Å"flowing consciousness†. When an individual receives new information it goes to the sensory memory where it is coded then to the working memory for temporary storage and manipulation of the task. The working memory is a combination of attention, concentration, short-term memory and has a limited capacity (Cowan, 2005). Basic structure and function of memory can be explained through what is called the stage model theory that was initially proposed in 1968 (Mcleod, 2007) The stage model consists of three stages: sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory (Clark, 2012). Sensory memory is the first stage of memory. Memories are stored here for a very short time approximately 3 or 4 seconds (Clark, 2012). Long enough for the information to be coded and sent to the short term memory (Clark, 2012). Short term memory is active memory or what you are thinking of at this given moment. It is also called the working memory (Ashcraft, 2001). Long term memory is information that is stored in memory, but mainly outside our consciousness (MRC, 1993). However it can be recalled through our working memory (MRC, 1993). The working memory has three components (Ashcraft, 2001. The main component is called the central executive (Ashcraft, 2001). It regulates and coordinates the flow of information within the working memory (Ashcraft, 2001). It also performs storage and processing functions. The second is the Phonological Loop (Ashcraft, 2001). This component stores verbal material (Ashcraft, 2001). The third is the visiospatial sketchpad  that processes material based on its visual and spatial characteristics (Ashcraft, 2001). There is significant evidence that stress affects the working memory (Luethi, 2009). For example, an individual’s ability to solve math problems, reading and retrieval of information from long term memory are all affected by stress (Luethi, 2009). Stress also affects an individual’s ability to accurately recall emotional events (Luethi, 2009). For example, the case involving Ronald Cotton and Jennifer Thompson who was convicted of rape and spent 10 years in prison, because of the victim’s misidentification. Cotton was later released due to DNA evidence (Thompson, 2000). â€Å"Psychological research findings show that many circumstances that lead to eyewitness testimony may be flawed and manipulated, says APAs general counsel Nathalie Gilfoyle† (Azar, 2011). â€Å"It is no longer enough to make a conviction in our legal system today, because it is unreliable† (Azar, 2011). The limbic system is the part of the brain that is responsible for memory as well as feelings of pleasure (Bailey, 2012). It consists of two large structures called the amygdala and hippocampus (Bailey, 2012). These two structures play an important role in memory. The amygdala determines what memories are to be stored and where they are to be stored within the brain (Bailey, 2012). â€Å"The hippocampus is responsible for sending memories out to the cerebral hemisphere for long-term storage and when necessary an individual is to retrieve them† (Bailey, 2012). Stress can be very harmful for the limbic system as seen in this case. Michael is experiencing several of the affects. For Michaels working memory to function properly it needs Michael’s ability to concentrate and be fully attentive and this is almost impossible when there is extreme stress. Michael is so stressed due to inward thoughts like his marital issues, the thought of losing his job, and memory loss which is a symptom of the stress and anxiety he is unable to give his full attention to anything else. He is only taking in bits and pieces of information, because of the stress and the thoughts that are causing the stress. Stress is the reason behind Michael’s memory loss. Michael also stated that it is difficult for him to pay attention and that his mind wonders. This is due to what is called â€Å"flowing consciousness†. The brain will use this technique to take a break from the concentrated attention that is being given to the stress related issues that Michael is experiencing so it can focus on storing information in his long  term memory. In other words his working memory gets over loaded and must shut down partially to store information from his short term memory to his long term memory. There are several strategies that would help Michael strengthen his memory for example, yoga, exercise, Keep a datebook for appointments and number one is to take care of his health and eat nutritious meals. The body cannot function properly when it is sleep deprived and is experiencing a lack of nutrients. Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics Ethics is one part of philosophy that will always be studied, and like most subjects in philosophy, will never be viewed the same by everyone. There are so many cultures that have so many different beliefs about the way a person's life should be lived out. Things like religion, poverty, and mental health all contribute to our beliefs in ethics. Some people believe that the mental state of a person or the motive for that person committing a crime should be factors when sentencing time comes. Others think that no matter the situation, a crime is a crime, and no compassion should be felt for the guilty. In the studies of philosophy these beliefs are put into two categories: utilitarian, witch would give leeway to the guilty depending on the circumstances, and Kantian, were a crime is a crime, no matter the motives involved. John Stuart Mill (1808-73) believed in an ethical theory known as utilitarianism. There are many formulations of this theory. One which is, "Everyone should act in such a way to bring the largest possibly balance of good over evil for everyone involved." However, good is a relative term. Utilitarians disagreed on what good really is. Mill made a distinction between happiness and sheer sensual pleasure. He defines happiness in terms of higher order pleasure (i.e. social enjoyments). In his Utilitarianism (1861), Mill described this principle as follows: According to the Greatest Happiness Principle †¦ The ultimate end, end, in reference to and for the sake of all other things that are desirable, (whether we are considering our own good or that of other people), is an existence exempt as far as possible from pain, and is rich in enjoyments. Therefore, based on this statement, three ideas may be identified: (1) The goodness of an act may be determined by the consequ ences of that act. (2) Consequences are determined by the amount of happiness or unhappiness caused. (3) A "good" man is one who considers the other man's pleasure (or pain) as equally as his own. Each person's happiness is equally important. Mill believed that a free act is not an undetermined act. It is determined by the unconstrained choice of the person performing the act. Either external or internal forces compel an unfree act. Mill also determined that every ... ...rue to their soul. To have a "healthy personality" one must believe in his decisions. Everyday people make decisions that affect other people. Weather the decisions are made by weighing the consequences that affect other people or if the decisions are made without debate on who it will hurt is up to each individual. No matter the choice, the basic concept is to choose good over evil to ones best ability. The moral way to make decisions will never be written in stone, even modern law is mixed up in the Utilitarian and Kantian beliefs. The law says that a crime is a crime, but in our courts lawyers debate over motives, consequences, and push for sympathy for the accused. 1.Michael Moore’s movie Sicko is so controversial because it makes people think. He went to Cuba and showed it, not as this horrible place that we’ve all be told but as a caring country willing to help our citizens. This movie proving that Universal Healthcare works in other countries makes people wonder why it has to be so difficult to have it here. The Unites States is suppose to be the most powerful country and yet so many Americans feel powerless when it comes to healthcare. 2.Some pros for Universal Healthcare are everyone would be covered. People would be healthier and live longer. Our poverty rate wouldn’t be as high because people wouldn’t be losing their homes because of medical bills. It would make businesses more productive because they wouldn’t have to carry insurance. Some cons for Universal healthcare are higher taxes. There is a longer wait for surgeries. All the people that work for the insurance companies would lose their jobs. 3.Some relative changes in healthcare because of the Universal Healthcare Bill are not having to wait or being denied because of a pre-existing condition. You will no longer have a higher rate because of your health status. Insurance companies wouldn’t be able to cancel your policy due to an adverse health condition. Children will be covered under their parents insurance policies until they are 27. New plans must cover check ups and preventative care with out co-pays. 4.Most Americans are concerned about the new law requiring almost everyone to have insurance. A lot of people simply can’t afford it although the new law is suppose to make it more affordable. Another concern is wait time to see a doctor. With more people seeing doctors there will be a longer wait time to get in and the less time the doctor has to spend with you in the room.

Michael Porters Strategy Michael Porter is the University Professor (the highest honor in Harvard University) in Harvard Business School. He is acknowledged as the father of competitive strategy. He has two main theoretical perspectives; one is â€Å"the five forces model of competition†, and the other one is just the â€Å"three competition strategies† (Michael Porters Strategy). The three competition strategies are cost leadership strategy, differentiation strategy and segmentation strategy. These strategies are used for people to achieve, maintain and even increase their competitiveness of their business.Porter thought that the purpose of these strategies is to make the business of the enterprises better than their competitors: some of the enterprises can gain higher revenue in some industries; however, in some other industries, the success of one of the strategies may just give the enterprise a little bit profit. Porter also said that the possibility could be very l ow that the basic goal of an enterprise may be more than one. Because enterprises need to try their best to achieve one strategy and they also need organizational arrangement to support the strategy.If the enterprise has more than one goal, these resources will be dispersed. Cost leadership strategy. This strategy asks the enterprises to establish efficient production line, decrease the cost on the basis of their experience, and control the cost of management and production cost, so as to reduce the costs of R&D (research and development), service, marketing, advertising, etc. In order to reach these goals, management need to be highly concentrated.
